The Lantern That Follows
“There was no bearer. Just the light. Like a thought that wouldn’t leave me alone.”
I first saw it while crossing a broken bridge near the Weeping Quarry. A small bobbing light behind me—dim, patient, almost polite in its presence. I assumed it was another traveler at first, but when I turned... no one. Just the lantern. Floating. Following. Matching my steps at a respectful distance.
I did what anyone would do. I ran.
By nightfall, it was back. Always ten paces behind. Never closer. Never gone. I’ve stopped questioning whether it’s real. The light is real. The feeling is real. The meaning? That part’s murkier than the Cindergate Swamps at midnight.
But I have some theories.

History & Legends
There are whispers of “Watcher Lanterns” across Loria. Each tale differs: a grieving mother guided home by one after losing her child in the fog; a thief pursued by a red-lit lantern until he confessed. One chronicle from the Old Faelands even speaks of a war priest whose lantern followed him until the moment of his death—then vanished.
Scholars propose the lantern is not a device, but a manifestation of memory, bound to the subconscious of the one it follows. Others believe it to be a species of semi-sentient magical entity: a light without flame, a thought with a wick.
It does not speak. It does not burn anything. It simply follows.
And it only ever appears once—to a single person, for a single purpose.
Environmental & Magical Effects
- The Lantern always remains ten paces behind the chosen individual.
- It produces no heat, but emits soft golden light (or another hue if emotionally charged).
- When the bearer is in danger, it may flare, dim, or change color.
- It cannot be touched, extinguished, or interacted with. Attempts to do so pass through it.
- If ignored or rejected, it may vanish temporarily—but it always returns, days later, resuming its silent vigil.
Color shifts may reflect:
- Gold: Neutral/default
- Red: Danger, violation, moral transgression
- Blue: Sorrow, regret
- Green: Peace, safety
- Purple: Unknown influence (possibly eldritch or spiritual resonance)
Encounters & Story Use
Player Possession
- One character finds the Lantern after a meaningful event: breaking a vow, witnessing a death, touching a cursed relic.
- It serves as a non-verbal companion that grows more active over time—possibly even intervening in small ways (light flaring before danger, guiding with brightness).
NPC Possession
- An NPC is followed by the Lantern and will not discuss it. It may hint at their past or a critical decision point in the narrative.
- The Lantern might eventually transfer to a player when the NPC dies or resolves their unfinished business.
Symbolic Use
- It could be a harbinger, counting down toward an event or transformation.
- Some temples believe the Lantern marks the chosen of forgotten gods. Others think it tracks those near death.
Player Options & Story Hooks
- A sect of Lanternkeepers exists, devoted to tracking and studying these lights. Are they helpful... or hunting them?
- The Lantern could be a key to another plane, visible only under moonlight or at a forgotten shrine.
- A black-market mage offers to remove it—for a price. What happens if the Lantern doesn’t want to leave?
- It may only appear once per generation in certain bloodlines or orders. A prophecy misunderstood.
Notes
- The Lantern never initiates conflict. It creates atmosphere, mystery, and emotional pressure.
- You can build entire sessions around whether it’s good, evil, neutral, divine, or something else entirely.
- Its silence is its power. The unknown makes it potent. Don’t answer it too soon.
Closing
Some say the Lantern is a blessing—others a warning. In Loria, it may be both.
If you see one behind you, don’t run.
Don’t speak.
Don’t try to touch it.
Just keep walking.
It already knows where you’re going.
